Chane ki daal with louki

Chane ki Daal with Louki (split baby chickpeas lentil with bottle gourd) is traditional North Indian cuisine. Louki (Bottle Gourd) is not a welcome vegetable for most of the kids. Well, if there is Lauki ke kofte ki sabzi (grated bottle gourd dumplings in curry) then its a different story altogether. But as kofte ki sabzi involves deep fried preparation we cannot prepare this in our daily regular meals.

Then how to feed kids this very nutritious vegetable? Try to add chana daal along with louki and this dull vegetable will turn into a delicious dish. Just before serving, add one spoon of pure ghee (clarified butter) in this daal and the taste goes to another level.

There is one more variety of chana daal/split baby chickpea lentil with spinach in the blog – If you are interested, please take a look…Daal paalak (split chickpea lentil with spinach)

Chana daal 3/4 cup

Louki 200 grams

Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp

Salt 1 tsp

Water 2 cups

Tadka (seasoning)

Rai (small mustard seeds) 1/2 tsp

Jeera (cumin seeds) 1/2 tsp

Hing (Asafotida) 1/8 tsp

Oil/ghee 3 tbsp

Red chilly powder 1 tsp

turmeric powder 1/8 tsp

2 tomatoes, 1 onion, 3-4 green chilies, tiny piece of ginger

Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing

A few points….
  1. You can reduce the quantity of louki.
  2. Cook chana daal on sim heat for at least 15 to 20 minutes as it takes slightly longer time to get cooked compared to other lentils.
  3. You can also add garlic in the puree.
  4. Ghee can be used to prepare tadka in place of oil.

Wash chana daal nicely and soak it in two cups of water for an hour. It will puff up nicely in one hour.

After an hour, wash, peel and chop louki in small pieces. Add turmeric powder and salt in chana daal along with louki pieces and pressure cook it till chana daal becomes soft.

While chana daal is getting cooked, we will prepare tadka.Β  Wash and chop onion, tomatoes, green chilies and ginger and grind them in a mixer. Heat oil in a pan or wok and crackle rai, hing and jeera.

Add grinded puree in the oil and add turmeric and red chili powder. Cook till the water evaporates leaving only oil.

tadka for chana louki daal is ready

Daal must be cooked by now. Switch off the heat and remove the lid off the pressure cooker once it cools down.

chana daal is ready

Add this louki – daal in the ready tadka. If you feel that consistency is too thick, add hot water. Shift chane ki daal with louki in serving bowl and garnish with coriander leaves.

    1. Deepika, thank you very much. It happens a lot with me also. For no reason sometimes I just stop cooking some particular dish and then by listening it from my friend or sister I realize that I have not cooked it for agesπŸ˜‡

  1. We must eat chana dal, it has many specialties, if it is with gourd, then its nutrition and taste are doubled. With hot rice, I can’t wait to eat it. πŸ˜‹Thanks for another awesome recipe ma’am πŸ˜ŠπŸ€—πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘ŒπŸŒ»πŸŽ†

  2. I did not fin any bottle gourd here in our little place of the world yet. Mangos are also gone all of a sudden, there wasn’t a single one in the supermarket last Friday. I will have a look at the other recipe, spinach we do have … πŸ˜‰

    1. Mangoes always disappear suddenly. I so much wanted raw mangoes, but nothing is available.
Stella, you can always replace bottle gourd with zucchini. Both have almost same taste. When we were in Jamaica, I used zucchini for all my bottle gourd based dishes.

    1. Thank you very much Ronit. I am glad that you liked the recipeβ˜ΊοΈπŸ™‚
Still if ‘Louki’ is not available in your city, you can replace it with zucchini.

      1. Yes Ronit, we had stayed a few years back in Jamaica and there also initially bottle gourd was not available. So started using zucchini for all my bottle gourd dishes.

    1. Tisha, thank you very much😊

  3. I love the hari mirchi you put in it. health and taste. You should go for Master Chef competition. I’m sure they can’t cook like you. It is not about doing things as per an alarm clock. Master Chef has to have a master touch. you have that. Who else can make lauki, karela tasty?

    1. Parneet, I am truly flatteredπŸ₯°Aapne kah diya ,vahi kaafi hai😊
I love to watch cooking shows but happy and content as a food blogger. When readers try recipes, their feedback makes my day beautiful. Now slowly after a break of 2 years I am trying to revive back my baking entrepreneurship. So with all ups and downs of life, I am content!!

      1. Walking these days is truly refreshing. Air is not polluted with petrol or diesel. With rain trees look so clean, fresh, and green. Seasonal flowers fill the air with nice fragrance!

      2. Well I would say probably it is like opportunity in disguise. For kids parents are avoiding market bought snacks, so you know…… ☺️

  4. I think I love rice too much… every dish you shared looks just wonderful with rice! it is such a great happiness to be your family and enjoy all your loving dishes!

    1. The best part of rice is that it is so easy to cook and one curry is enough to accompany. I am not a rice person but my sister can have rice in lunch and dinner each day!!

  5. ΰ€˜ΰ₯€ΰ€―ΰ€Ύ ΰ€šΰ€¨ΰ₯‡ ΰ€•ΰ₯€ ΰ€¦ΰ€Ύΰ€² is My favourite πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€—πŸ€ͺπŸ˜‹

    1. I feel it depends on individual to what they think is easy might be difficult for other.
In my opinion this dish is very easy to prepare if you have all ingredients.
