Homemade condensed milk or milkmaid

Ingredients :

Full fat milk 1/2 litre

Sugar 170 gm

A pinch of baking soda

A small note:

As we are preparing condensed milk or milkmaid at home, we have the liberty to control the quantity of sugar here. Depending on your taste bud, you can use 150 to 200 gram of sugar for 500 millilitre of milk.

Process :

Start boiling milk in a pan. As it begins to rise, add sugar and keep stirring on medium to high flame for 15 – 20 minutes. We can keep the flame on sim heat too but the process would take a much longer time.

The colour of milk will start changing once it starts thickening.

Milk will become quite thick or condensed after 15-20 minutes – switch off the gas at this time and add a pinch of baking soda. There will be some foam after adding baking soda, but that will settle down. Let condensed milk cool down completely.

  1. Hey Deeksha, that is a very interesting recipe. It had never occurred to me that this important ingredient of so many desserts could be made at home so easily.

    1. Narendra, thank you very much. Nowadays things are so easily available in the market that we are forgetting how our grandparents used to prepare everything in the kitchen. It used to be fresh and very economical. Sometimes I think next generation will stop buying groceries also.

      1. So very true, Deeksha! With so called convenience of processed foods has creeped in disease and malaise. In our quest for modernisation we are forgetting the wisdom of our simple past. I still recall the words of a doctor many years ago – to keep healthy, just eat what your grandmother ate!

  3. It never occurred to me to make condensed milk at home. It is a good idea because the sugar level can be controlled. What is the purpose of the baking soda? How does it affect the recipe?

    1. Kamini, thank you very much 😊
To control sugar portion was the most important fact behind preparing it at home. Otherwise now condensed milk is easily available in small shops also. Baking soda helps to preserve the deep flavor.
